How to Create a More Energy Efficient Home

Are you aware that Americans are spending over $5,000 each month? If you’re aiming to cut costs, a good place to start is with your utility bills. With the right changes, you can amp up energy efficiency and lower bills.

Keep reading to learn about the ways you can create a more energy-efficient home!

Choose Energy Efficient Appliances

Wondering how to be more energy efficient? Upgrade your appliances. You might be surprised by how much you can trim from energy bills!

Appliances with an Energy Star designation have met strict government standards for energy efficiency. Newer fridges and washing machines consume less electricity but look at the amps and volts listings to compare consumption.

Get regular HVAC inspections to keep the equipment running efficiently. And when it’s time to upgrade, choose higher-efficiency equipment that can cut your bills by around 10%.

Take Advantage of the Sun

Harnessing the sun’s power is another great way to become more energy efficient. Solar panels will require an upfront investment, but you won’t depend as much on the grid. And you’ll add to your home’s value if you ever decide to sell.

If you produce excess energy, you may even be able to sell it to your local power company. Get more information here!

Make Insulation a Priority

When it comes to home energy efficiency, insulation makes a huge difference. Blow in attic insulation for a little extra padding, and ensure that your roof isn’t letting air or water in. Install and use blinds on windows to block the sun and keep in more cool air.

Use 3-pane windows for enhanced insulation. Your windows won’t feel as drafty in the winter. And they’ll keep the cool air in during the summer.

Add weather stripping to windows and doors for a tighter seal in the cold winter months. You won’t feel compelled to crank up the thermostat because you’ll be retaining more warm air.

Conserve Water for Energy Efficiency

Are you letting the faucets run when you’re brushing your teeth or doing dishes? You’re probably wasting a lot of water. There are some simple steps to conserve water, however.

For starters, avoid running lots of smaller loads of laundry in favor of doing fewer larger loads. Along the same lines, turn to cold water, which will use less energy to achieve the same level of cleanliness.

Save Your Veggies

And save your fruit scraps and coffee grounds, too. That’s because you can take these organic materials and place them in a compost pile. As the organic material breaks down over time, you’ll end up with rich compost that you can use to grow to produce.

Starting a garden where you can use the compost also means you’ll make fewer trips to the store. And you’ll save money on groceries!

Create an Energy Efficient Home

When you put effort into creating an energy-efficient home, you can save money. Take smaller steps, like composting and conserving water. But also consider investing in solar energy, enhanced insulation, and more efficient appliances.
