Why Do I Have to Use a Gasket for My Machine Parts?

Gaskets are found in almost all mechanical appliances, from oil rigs to food processing and car assembly industries. If you’re looking for high-quality gaskets of all shapes and different materials, visit Gorilla Gasket company.

What is a Gasket?

Also known as a washer, a gasket is equipment used to seal the space between two or more surfaces. It’s usually made of rubber and comes in an assortment of shapes and sizes. They protect mobile parts and prevent friction that would typically occur due to constant rubbing. Gaskets are usually made from materials that can change shape without breaking and can fit any form.

Besides rubber, gaskets also come in materials such as:

Non-asbestos

These are made from a compressed mix of elastomer and fiber. They are great for working with substances such as acid, steam, and water.

Cork

Cork gaskets are reinforced with elastomer binding to make them flexible. They are used in processes involving solvents and fuel.

Types of Gaskets

Flange Gasket

It is used to seal the space between two flared sections of pipes to provide a larger surface area.

Sheet Gasket

A characteristic feature found in sheet gaskets is the varying holes. These gaskets are used in processes involving corrosive materials such as acid and mild caustics. They are made from carbon and synthetic substances such as rubber and neoprene.

Spiral Wound Gaskets

These are made from a combination of metal and filler material. The metal gives it support, while the filler acts as a sealant.

Double Jacket Gasket

Also made from metal and filler, the double jacket gasket is molded into a C shape and is mostly used for heat exchange.

Why Use Gaskets for Machine Parts?

Gaskets are used primarily in the manufacturing industry. They are preferred because they are resistant to corrosive materials, fluctuating temperatures, acids, and electricity.

Liquid Sealant

Gaskets can be used to seal leaks and prevent liquids from seeping into other components. They are made of rubber which offers better resistance to corrosive materials and is best suited for industries that use oil and solvents.

Environmental Sealant

These gaskets prevent contamination from dust and other substances. They can be found in components like electrical enclosures.

To Prevent Vibration

Gaskets have anti-vibration properties used to reduce disruption and damage caused by vibration. They are used in factories or processes involving pipe supports or structural bearings.

Mounting

They are used to protect sensitive units from destructive elements such as shock, dust, and other substances.

Industrial applications of gaskets

Automobile Industry

This industry widely uses rubber gaskets to keep out leaks and contaminants such as dust. They can be found in car doors and in the engine to prevent water from infiltrating the systems.

Assembly Industry

Gaskets are commonly used in equipment such as valves and conveyor belts and in environments where there are high temperatures.

Medical Industry

They are used in devices such as catheters and IV bags because they prevent contaminations and pathogens.

The Food Industry

Food factories use gaskets to prevent leakage when filling beverage bottles.

Common Mistakes People Make When Using Gaskets

Not Using Enough Sealant

A sealant is used to hold gaskets in place. When you apply inadequate sealant it doesn’t secure the gasket in place and may cause leaks. On the other hand, excessive use of sealants clogs surfaces and can cause machines to malfunction.

Using the Wrong Gasket Maker

A gasket maker eliminates channels where leaks seep through and protect against the effects of fluids and temperature changes. Using the wrong model hinders their function and causes leakage.

USING Gasket Maker Instead of Sealant

Gasket makers are used to protecting against leaks and destruction from fluids while sealants are designed to hold gaskets in place. Replacing sealant with a gasket maker causes the gasket to shift around. This is because the gasket maker has a thick consistency making it inappropriate for holding gaskets in place.

NOT Allowing Enough Time for Gasket Makers to Cure

Gasket makers require enough time to cure before putting it back to use. The same applies to sealants. When you put them back immediately, you compromise their use – the adhesives won’t hold the gaskets properly, while gasket makers won’t protect against leaks.

Improper Assembly

Not taking enough time to reassemble parts can mean a malfunction in the associated systems. Ensure your mechanic pays keen attention to the required steps to prevent this mistake.
