The Health Benefits of Arguing

Arguing has a bad reputation but it can actually provide us with an array of health benefits and refraining from arguments could do you more harm than good health-wise. During the Hajj pilgrimage, Muslims are prohibited from arguing or fighting to bring themselves closer to purity. Despite this, if they’re looking to cleanse their soul, they might want to consider the opposite approach. There’s no denying that once you’ve aired a frustration that’s been niggling away at you, you feel like a weight has been lifted. As far as this is concerned, it’s no wonder why arguing might be quite a positive thing.

An Increase in Optimism

First and foremost, arguing makes you more optimistic. Although you might think that arguing only encourages you to see the negative aspects, this isn’t what happens. Instead, because people don’t bite their tongue in an argument, as they usually would, this helps them obtain a feeling of control. This feeling of control results in optimism, as they are no longer being dragged down by the weight of their problem. On the contrary, they’re using the problem as a platform to voice their opinions that they may have previously felt unable to do.

Reduced Cortisol Levels

Cortisol is otherwise known as the stress hormone and those who refrain from arguing tend to have significantly higher levels of such. By swallowing your frustration, you hold onto cortisol, allowing it to linger in your system. As a result, you’ll also be more prone to aging and may even place yourself at greater risk of getting certain cancers. Ultimately, harboring stress and frustration could be detrimental to your well-being, and finding a healthy way to let it out is one of the best things you can do. Arguing has toxic connotations, but it doesn’t need to be executed in an abusive way, in fact, there are many ways in which you can express your frustration without upsetting the other person.

Prevention of Resentment

If you refuse to speak with the person that has upset you, you will likely start to harbor negative emotions and begin to feel resentment towards them. Not only is this damaging to your relationship, but it’s also detrimental to your health. As previously mentioned, ongoing feelings of frustration and anger only lead to negative effects on your health. Bottling up any form of negativity will only provide it with an environment to linger and grow. Letting out this negativity makes sure it’s squashed, providing you with a clean and healthy slate.

Reduced Aches and Pains

When you feel tense emotionally, it can contribute to your physical tension, which results in aches, pains, and even nausea. Struggling emotionally can be very physically draining, as your body is doing all that it can to prevent your brain from going into overdrive. As a result, your physical well-being takes a backseat, and you suffer from discomfort because of it. Everyone has experienced feeling emotionally or mentally run down, which results in a physical illness. The same can be said for bottling up negative emotions until your body physically can’t handle them anymore.

Increased Lifespan

It’s a fact that married couples who argue tend to live longer than those who don’t. You may not believe it, but stress sits among the country’s worst health epidemics, and bottling up negative emotions only contributes to your stress levels. As previously mentioned, arguing doesn’t mean being toxic towards one another; it means expressing your side of the situation, listening to theirs, and reaching a solution together. Remember, it’s you and them against the problem, not you against them.
