A Basic Guide to Taking Care of the Elderly

Do you need a guide to learn how to take care of senior citizens?

Taking care of the elderly is challenging because the care you know as normal may not apply to them. When you’re younger, you can resist the hot or cold weather, and shrugging it off is normal. However, small temperature changes can give a different feel for the elderly.

When caring for aging parents, you need to give them your attention, especially during this pandemic. You need to familiarize yourself with the ways to provide them comfort and services.

This is your basic guide when taking care of the elderly. Read what we have below and learn more.

Ensure That They’re Active

Older adults need at least 150 minutes of exercise each week. Get a piece of advice from a physical therapist to learn of the exercises an aging parent can do. This will help them remain active and protected from any diseases.

Elderly people can find it difficult to get up, and they can become set rigid after sitting down for too long or sleeping in the same position for a fixed period. To aid your loved one and to make their life, even easier you should look at getting reclining chairs and armchairs that fit within your living room, and also adjustable beds that allow them to maneuver, lift and alter their bed as they see fit. When your elderly loved one has slept better or sat better you will notice an improvement in their behavior which should be positive for everyone within your home.

Encourage your elders to do exercises that promote the passive range of motion. Joint health is important for the elderly because when ignored, it affects their daily life. Also, make sure they visit a psychologist on regular basis to prevent stress or anxiety and this is one of the main reasons why never to be ashamed of visiting a psychologist

Feed Them A Healthy Meal

Like how we need to feed ourselves with healthy food, the same applies to the elderly. However, elders need more protein and vitamins compared to what younger adults eat every day. The diet of an aging parent changes because some food is not easy for them to digest or chew.

The amount of food we can feed them is also different because they eat less than we do. Depending on their health situations, you need to consider if they have diabetes or not. Plan your meals when taking care of the elderly to ensure that they eat healthily.

Make Some Home Changes

The home of your aging parents needs some care and maintenance. You will need to make some changes to the house to accommodate them. This will help them move around the house freely and at ease.

Some changes you can add around the house are some bars. Grabbing bars in the toilet and stairs will help them move by themselves. Don’t forget to tuck away any wires and cables.

Installing lights in strategic places will help them navigate parts of the house at night. There are more home modifications you can do for your aging parent. Consult them to know more about their needs and for more info.

Involve Them in Important Decisions

Talking to the elderly is one of the best ways you can help them relax and get them involved. Involving them in important decisions is a form of talking that they will appreciate. This helps them stay active and feel a part of something.

Make sure they join in important decisions for their benefit, such as financial or health decisions. Asking them for advice is also a great way of taking care of them.
