IRS Form 2290: Instructions For E-Filing

February 8, 2022

As a trucker, you need to follow your form 2290 instructions and start filing your IRS HVUT before the due date to avoid any IRS penalties.

Form 2290 instructions mandate that you need to file IRS HVUT if you use heavy vehicles for 5,000 miles or above (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles). All vehicles that gauge 55,000 pounds or above on the weight scale are considered to be heavy vehicles.

The IRS keeps a strict monitor on the collection of IRS HVUT returns. If you fail to file your form 2290 before the due date, the IRS will notify you, and you will have to pay late-filing penalties. If you continue to disregard the notice, you will face more serious penalties from the IRS.
