See below for an in-depth list of legal tips that every lawyer wants you to know before they represent you.

1. Pedestrian Accidents Can Be Avoided

Perhaps you’ve recently been involved in an accident that involved a pedestrian. For example, you or a loved one may have hit them with your car. Perhaps you’re afraid that will happen one day.

If so, then you need to know that pedestrian accidents can be prevented. A lot of pedestrian accidents occur because the driver is distracting himself or herself. Such distractions include:

  • Texting and Driving
  • Driving While Impaired
  • Drugs or Alcohol Were Involved

But there are others. What most people don’t realize is that you can be convicted of manslaughter whether a person’s death was intentional or not. That applies to car incidents with pedestrians as well.

In other to avoid becoming involved in a pedestrian accident, be sure to follow these rules:

  • Put your phone away while driving
  • Avoid taking your eyes off the road (an accident can occur in one second)
  • Always keep your hands at 10 and 2 while driving
  • Never run a red light or through a stop sign at a crosswalk
  • Don’t get behind the wheel if you are impaired or over-exhausted

2. Overcommunication Isn’t Necessary

Don’t get us wrong, your lawyer should always be there to answer the questions that you have. However, if you call them too much, it can border over the line of excessive.

At some point, your lawyer needs to spend time in deep focus on your case. They can’t do that if they’re constantly having to answer your calls, text, or emails.

Remember, you aren’t the only client that they’re helping out. If you spend a majority of their time answering you every question, they’ll have less time to focus on your case before moving on to another client that they’re helping. Like anyone else, they only have so much time in a day!

Think of it this way: would you want other clients heckling your attorney while he’s trying to work on your case? Of course not.

While it might feel strange, it’s perfectly normal to go a few days without speaking to your lawyer. Some days, there won’t be anything for them to update you on.

This stress can be solved during the initial conversation. Ask the lawyer you’ve hired what their typical workload looks like. Setting that expectation can give you both peace of mind!

3. You Can Build Evidence

Not only can you build evidence, but there are also certain cases in which a majority of the evidence will need to be gathered by you.

Take a car crash, for example. A majority of the evidence can be gathered from the initial scene of the crash. Once you drive away, that evidence is hard to get back.

You’ll need to compile evidence for your cash by gathering things like:

  • Statements from the witnesses that stayed behind
  • Photos of the vehicles, your injuries, the street, their license plates, etc.
  • Contact information from the other party/parties involved

Of course, your lawyer will be able to build evidence using their extensive resources and network. But if you have witness information for them to contact, they can get to work at strengthening your case and building off of evidence from the scene of the crash.

4. The Truth Is Always Best

Lying to your lawyer will often come back to bite you. Remember, your attorney can’t help you if they don’t know the whole story.

Many people try to avoid the truth because they believe the lawyer will contact local authorities or tell others what you’ve said. However, they’re legally inclined to hold your information private through attorney-client privilege.

Tell your lawyer everything. Tell them whether you were at fault, what you remember, things that may have led to the accident, and so on. once you’ve laid everything out, they can give you legal advice on the next steps to take.

5. Chemistry Is Important

Everyone wants to hire the biggest name in town, but what if you don’t like the way they communicate with their clients? What if you want someone that thinks the same way you do?

Chemistry is a vitally important factor of the lawyer you should hire. You need someone that you understand and vice versa. Someone that talks the same way that you do.

Gauge these things during the initial conversation. Does what they’re saying make sense? Do you like the way they’re communicating with you? If so, then it’s a good sign they’re the right person for the job.
