What Are the Most Common Dental Problems That Exist Today?

February 8, 2022

Although 58% of people visit the dentist at least once a year, that doesn’t mean that problems can’t still occur. They’re even more likely to happen if the visits are less than this, though the recommendation is once every six months.

Dental problems are very common, and most people struggle with them sooner or later. Fortunately, the most common dental problems are very treatable, and you’re not alone.

Dentists are very used to seeing these and experienced in treating them.

Read on to find out about the most common problems and what a dentist can do.

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is one of the most common tooth problems, and sometimes good dental hygiene can’t even solve it.

Some people have sensitive teeth because of decay, and they need treatment. Others have teeth that are naturally sensitive to hot and cold temperatures, and certain kinds of toothpaste are designed to help with this.

A dentist can look at your teeth and tell you if the sensitivity comes from a problem or is natural.

Cavities

Cavities are one of the biggest problems for people. If you don’t have good oral hygiene, they’re more likely to occur.

Cavities happen when bacteria are allowed to build upon the teeth and start eating away at them. They’re holes in the teeth that a dentist then needs to fill.

Sometimes, cavities have no symptoms whatsoever and are only caught at a routine check-up. Other times, cavities can be very uncomfortable and even cause toothache which means they’ll be very obvious.

If you suspect you have a cavity, it’s a good idea to get it seen sooner rather than later. They can usually be prevented by brushing twice a day and flossing regularly.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Most people’s wisdom teeth erupt when they become an adult, but there isn’t any room in the mouth for them to come through. This causes what’s called an impacted tooth, as it can’t fully come through the gum.

Symptoms you might have an impacted wisdom tooth include:

  • Tooth pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Bad breath

It’s better to get the tooth removed by a routine surgery ASAP, as there can be complications if this is left untreated.

Bruxism

Bruxism is the term for when someone grinds their teeth. This is usually done in their sleep, but can also happen subconsciously when stress affects someone badly.

There are ways to stop bruxism, and it’s better to deal with it quickly as it can be painful and it can wear down the teeth. Click here to learn more
