A Noob’s Guide to Diagnosing Computer Problems

April 16, 2021

Computer literacy is one of the most important skills to master these days. Our most valuable tools are computers and smartphones, and not knowing how to use one can cause serious issues.

New viruses and anti-virus programs are being developed all the time. A great example of this is what’s happening to Apple Computers. For years, Apple has prided itself on being far more resistant to viruses and other harmful programs.

Unfortunately, Apple has fallen behind Microsoft in terms of security, and doesn’t show any signs of bouncing back.

The good news is that most issues are fixable once diagnosed. We’ll talk about how to diagnose computer problems in this article.

1. Reboot the Computer

Sometimes, the problem is easy to solve, so easy that the computer will solve it for you. The only thing you have to do is reboot the computer.

Rebooting is a form of restarting. To reboot a computer, you have to hold down the power button until all lights near the power button go out.

Afterwards, walk away from the computer for a few minutes. It takes very little time, less than a minute, but distracting yourself can help that time go faster.

Return to the computer and push the power button again to turn it back on. This will cause the computer to restart its system, all the while combing through it in hopes of locating anything that seems strange.

Sometimes, it’ll fix these issues itself. Other times, it’ll point them out to you. If this doesn’t fix the problem, the issue may be viruses or the hardware itself.

2. Look for Updates and Viruses

Sometimes, the issue isn’t that the computer is broken, but that it’s outdated. The average computer lasts 8 years at most before it should be replaced.

In the meantime, it’s important to keep the computer clean and updated. Don’t let it get too dusty and look into Settings regularly to see if there are updates you need to install.

In some cases, this may require you to restart your computer.

You should also run a regular virus scan. This can be done by opening your antivirus program. Once open, the program menu should have an option to run a scan and try to disable Antimalware service executable.

If you do not have an antivirus program, install one. You need to be protected from viruses. If you already have a virus, the best thing to do is to see a computer repair service.

As the name implies, a virus scan will help detect and destroy viruses in your computer system. It’s one of the most important tools to diagnose computer problems.

Ways to Diagnose Computer Problems

There are a few different ways to diagnose computer problems. There’s software to diagnose computer problems built into the computer and available for purchase separately from the computer.

We’ve talked about a few of these programs in the paragraphs above, but there are others.
