If you love swimming, the idea of a big and wide swimming pool will excite you. An Olympic size pool is exciting already, but what if I told you there is a pool that occupies an astonishing 20 acres? The next thought in your mind would probably be how they manage to build such a large pool or maintain hygiene. Well, just like we have swimming pool cleaners around us, this pool’s logistics are also well taken care of. That is just one fact; below, we look at various other fun facts about swimming pools apart from just managing heat of the summer.

Largest Pool in The World

The pool is located on an expansive 20 acres with the equivalence of 66 million gallons of water. It was constructed in 2006; It’s one kilometer long and 3.5 meters deep. Located at San Alfonso del Mar in Algarrobo, Chile, the pool receives water from the Pacific Ocean adjacent to the private resort. It also encompasses an artificial lagoon.

There Are Five Critical Water Safety Skills

Otherwise known as water competency, critical water safety skills are five essential skills that could save your life in water. It means that a swimmer can anticipate, avoid and survive common situations that result in drowning. With the five competencies, the swimmer should also recognize and aid others who may need help.


The five skills include:

  • The ability to get into the water by jumping over your head
  • The ability to tread water l, float, or get back to the water surface for at least a minute.
  • Ability to do a full circle turnaround and still find an exit
  • Ability to swim at least 25 yards to exit the water body or pool
  • Ability to exit a swimming pool without using a ladder

80% percent of Americans claim they can swim. However, unless you can do the five basic water competency skills listed above, you are still considered an armature.

World’s Deepest Swimming Pool

According to the Guinness World Records, the world’s deepest swimming pool is located in Poland and is 45 meters deep. The pool is known as Deepspot; the pool can accommodate 8,000 cubic meters of water. This means that the pool can be filled with a total of 27 Olympic size pools. The pool boasts a safe underwater tunnel. This enables spectators to watch swimming and other aquatic activities such as scuba diving. The pool took more than two years to complete and is estimated to have cost $10.6 million. Scuba divers use it as a perfect training ground. For the longest time, the title for the longest swimming pool was held by Champ Y-40 Deep Joy. The pool located in Italy is 42 meters deep.

Olympic Size Swimming Pools are Regulated

Since they are meant for competitions, Olympic size swimming pools are regulated in terms of dimensions. They should be 50 meters long and 25 meters in width. This is in addition to having ten lanes measuring 2.5 meters long and a water temperature of between 25-28°C. These requirements are mandatory to be recognized by the International Swimming Federation (FINA). This is the official federation that administers water sports competitions internationally. The organization is based in Switzerland.

Competitive Swimming Pool Certification

Did you know you cannot hold competitive swimming without pool certification? If you own a pool meant for competitions, it has to be verified by USA swimming, the body that governs competitive swimming in the United States.  The organization is based in Colorado but has local swimming committees in every state. According to the organization, your pool has to be certified by a licensed engineer or surveyor. Certified pools are listed on USA Swimming’s website.

Highest Outdoor Infinity Pool in the World

An infinity pool creates a visual effect of water in the pool having no boundary with a larger water body. Instead, the two appear to be merged. Water flows over an edge hence the name zero edge pool. The highest infinity pool is located in Dubai’s Address Beach Resort. Located on the 77th floor, the pool won a place on the Guinness book of records. It stands at 965 TF above the ground.

Half of the American Population Can’t Swim

This may come as a shocker. However, a survey conducted by the American Red Cross in 2014 found out that 54 percent of Americans could not swim. The Red Cross was launching a campaign to help cut out drowning incidents by half.
