6 Awesome Tips to Grow Roses in Your Garden

Roses are perhaps the most beautiful and popular flowers. A single sight of beautiful blooming roses in the home garden is enough to brighten up anyone’s day. However, most people struggle to plant roses in their garden and instead opt to buy white roses in bulk for their homes. Planting roses in your home garden is easier than you think. While planting roses, there are two important factors to keep in mind to ensure they thrive. Firstly, make sure you plant roses in the right growing condition, and second, plant them properly. Below we have enlisted 6 essential rules to plant roses in your garden. But first, let’s look at the right conditions for growing roses.

Conditions for Planting Roses

A good amount of sunlight is required to plant the roses. So, make sure to choose a site where roses can get six or more hours of sunlight. However, if you live in an area with extremely hot weather conditions with limited water supply, you might consider placing roses in a shaded area. In addition, consider a place that is protected from strong winds and rain droplets. Lastly, do not overcrowd your rose bushes. The more airflow you have around the plants, the less likely the chances of fungal diseases like black spots and powdery mildew on the leaves will be less likely.

1. Prepare the Planting Hole

The first step to planting a rose is to dig a hole slightly wider than the rose’s root ball. Generally, about 15 to 18inches deep by 18 to 24 inches wide holes will be perfect. Also, make sure to mix a handful of phosphate into the soil you removed and save it for refilling the hole later. Additionally, avoid filling anything else at the time of planting. We will recommend letting the roots take hold before using any fertilizers. Lastly, mixing in some compost or other organic matter is a good idea to improve the soil quality.

2. Prepare the Rose

If you have purchased the roses from a shop, it most likely comes in a container. To plant it, gently remove it from the pot and loosen the roots to make it extend out as soon as they are planted. To make the plant come out of the pot, grab the rose from the base and invert the pot. If the rose is bare-root, consider unpacking the roots and inspecting them to remove the broken or soft roots with rot.

3. Choose the Roses

There are hundreds of rose varieties available, ranging from micro-miniatures to climbing roses. Make sure to choose the best variety of roses for your garden. From dainty roses to red roses, you can choose the preferred variety. While it may be tempting to plant numerous roses in the garden, planting too many different types of roses can end up creating disorder in the garden space. Therefore, it is best to satisfy yourself with a few best varieties instead of dozens of mismatched plants. If you want roses for decoration in home interiors, you can buy white roses in bulk.

4. Plant the Roses

Now comes the hard part! Make a mound in the center of the hole for bare root roses using a mixture of the removed soil and bone meal. Make the mound high enough so that the knobby graft union is barely below the soil level when the rose bush is placed on top of it. Next, place the root ball in the hole for container-grown roses, making the graft union slightly below the soil line. Once the plant has settled, the graft union should be thoroughly buried, about 1 to 2 inches underground.

5. Apply Water

To keep the roses in the best shape, you should keep the soil even throughout the season. Make sure to water deeply and around the base area of the roses. The frequency and amount of watering depending on the type of soil and climate conditions. Roses growing in sandy soils need more watering than those roses growing in heavier clay soils. Likewise, make sure to water new roses every day during dry weather to make sure they stay in the best conditions. In addition, also pay attention to how you water your plant. To ensure your rose stays in the best shape, avoid wetting the foliage and use a soaker hose of watering directly at the soil.

6. Care for Your Rose

Simply planting the rose is not enough! You need to take proper care to keep your roses healthy. You should water your roses every week to encourage a deep root system. Additionally, prune your roses during early spring to keep them well-groomed. Furthermore, during the growing season, use the granular fertilizer mixed in the soul after it starts to bloom. Also, keep your roses safe from diseases by opting to buy rose arrangements in a box. These disease-resistant varieties are bred and selected to resist common rose diseases like powdery mildew and black spot.
