How to Treat Tendinitis

Tendinitis is a painful and uncomfortable condition that is caused by a tendon becoming irritated or inflamed.  Tendinitis is most commonly found in knees, heels, elbows, wrists, and shoulders. This condition is also known as “Tennis elbow” or “Pitcher’s shoulder”.

There is a range of treatments available for this condition, but it can be hard to know what is appropriate. For the most part, resting the joint and soothing it with ice can help. However, sometimes extra treatment methods are needed.

Medication

Over-the-counter painkillers can help to relieve some of the pain associated with tendinitis.  Topical creams that contain anti-inflammatory medications can also help. On occasion, creams such as these can be used with over-the-counter medication.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids may also be useful as they can help to reduce inflammation and ease pain. Your doctor will have to prescribe corticosteroids if you want to take them. If you are in so much pain that you need to take this type of medication, you could need further help.

Other Treatment

Your doctor may suggest that you see a physical therapist. Your muscles may need to be stretched and strengthened so that they can recover quicker. A physical therapist can recommend exercises that could help to prevent injury in the future.  You will need to do the exercises at home, so it’s important that you know how many times a day you should do them.

Treatments to Use at Home

One of the best ways for you to treat tendinitis is to rest your joint. Applying some ice to the area can help to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Ice packs should be applied to the injured area for up to 20 minutes, three times a day. If you don’t have an ice pack, consider using some frozen peas instead.

Compressing the area can also help as it works to reduce swelling. Wrapping some bandages around the affected area is ideal. Just make sure that the bandages or wraps are not too tight.

Finally, you should elevate the injured area if you can. For example, if your ankle is injured, you should raise your leg so that it is elevated higher than your heart. This can help to reduce both pain and swelling.

Surgery

If taking medication and resting your affected joint has failed, your doctor may suggest that you have surgery. Only those who have little to no efficacy from medication and rest are likely to be put forward for surgery.

If the tendon has come away from the bone, surgery could be required. The surgery will involve repairing the tendon so that it’s back where it should be. Patients may also need to undergo rehabilitation so they can use the joint again.

Tendinitis is a nasty, painful condition that can cause mobility issues. However, with the right treatment, pain and swelling can be relieved. If you think you have tendinitis, please speak to your doctor. They may be able to suggest a range of therapies and treatments that could help.
